WASTE TO WEALTH

Did you know that more than 20 billion pounds of cosmetically imperfect foods are wasted each year in the United States. More so, farmers leave up to 30% of their produce in the field because it isn’t aesthetically pleasing enough to pick and sell. In response to these challenges, Satu Hati began a relentless search for circular, revolutionary materials as sustainable alternatives. Our plant based leather is sourced from verified suppliers who utilize agricultural waste to create high-quality, low-impact materials, ensuring additional income for farmers too. While we’ve experimented with cactus leather, apple leather and bamboo leather, our conscience didn’t let us proceed due to the high percentage of plastic in them. We found luck with tomato leather and haven’t looked back since. It looks and feels just like leather, definitely doesn’t smell like it and most importantly, it’s plastic free! We’re hopeful that we will have more options in the near future. At Satu Hati, every purchase serves a purpose – supporting livelihoods, reducing carbon footprints, and advocating for cruelty-free alternatives.

SAY NO TO LEATHER

The environmental impact of leather production is immense. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reports that the leather industry accounts for 18% of global greenhouse gas emissions, making it a major contributor to climate change. It also consumes significant amounts of water and energy, worsening its environmental footprint. Deforestation is another serious issue, as forests are cleared for cattle ranching to meet leather demand, leading to habitat destruction and increased carbon emissions. And the tanning process involves toxic chemicals like chromium, which pollute water sources, harming aquatic life and contaminating drinking water. In good conscience, we can never use leather. More importantly, we feel an inherent responsibility to spread awareness and drive a movement towards conscious, ethical consumerism—because we care about our planet and future generations.
